Eyes on Jesus: He Walked the Walk

“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24
Jesus did not merely speak about love; He lived it. Every step of His ministry was directed toward sinners. He prayed, taught, healed, and served — always seeking not Himself but us. He walked the walk we could not walk, remaining faithful all the way to the cross.
As I write this, students from Martin Luther School are traveling through Italy. On Ash Wednesday, we stood inside St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, a church dating to the 11th century. In a humbling moment, we gathered in the crypt beneath the altar for devotion and marked one another with ashes. Surrounded by centuries of Christian witness, the realization struck us: Jesus walked the walk — for Mark the Evangelist, and for us.
Many in Italy receive ashes sprinkled on their heads, yet as we walked through Venice bearing the sign of the cross, we remembered what it proclaims. The cross marks both our mortality and our redemption. Jesus accomplished what we could not, remaining faithful and seeking us in love, and because of Him, we belong to Christ.
Lord Jesus, fix our eyes on You. Thank You for walking faithfully for us and seeking us in love. Remind us through the cross that we are forgiven and redeemed. Lead us to follow You in faith each day. Amen.
